    The Arctic Studies Center (ASC) was founded in line with “Liaoda Xiaofa Document 2018-16” issued by Liaocheng University on March 9, 2018. The document stated, “in order to maximize domestic resources, to connect with high quality social resources, to attract outstanding talents in related scientific research fields, to form high-end scientific research teams, and promote scientific and technological innovation and achievement transformation at Liaocheng University, Liaocheng University decided to establish the Arctic Studies Center after discussion.”

  • April 27, 2018

    The first Arctic Studies Workshop of ASC was  chaired by Professor Qu Feng, Director of the Arctic Studies Center. Dr. Philip Demgenski, a postdoctoral researcher in anthropology at the French Higher Institution of Social Sciences, was invited to present a report with the title "From Material to Intangible Cultural Heritage: Between China and the World." Dr. Philip's research paradigm is of significant inspiration to the polar cultural heritage research being carried out by the Arctic Studies Center.

  • May 27, 2018

    On the afternoon of May 27, 2018,  ASC held the “First Arctic Studies Forum -- the International Shaman and Anthropology Research Conference of Extremely Cold Regions.” Experts and scholars from well-known universities and research institutions at home and abroad were gathered in our university, to discuss about research in polar social sciences and empower regional research in different countries. President Cai Xianjin attended the opening ceremony of the forum and delivered a speech. The opening ceremony was presided by Vice-Chancellor Wang Zhaofeng. Cai Xianjin presented the certificate of honorary professor to a number of professors, namely, Guo Shuyun, Director of the Shaman Education Research Center at Dalian Nationalities University, Tang Huisheng, Director of the Center for the Comparative Research of Ancient Civilizations at Hebei Normal University, Se Yin, from School of Ethnology and Sociology of Central University for Nationalities, and Ben Potter, Director of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

    The first international scholar hired by ASC, Dr. Paul Montgomery from Ireland arrived at the Centre. His research focus is on environmental archaeology in Greenland, Iceland and Northern Ireland. Then on October 1 and 7, the second and third expert, Professor Michael from Germany and Professor Oleg from Russia, joined the Arctic Studies Center respectively. Both of them are experts in Siberian ethnology and anthropology. On October 30, Daniela from Italy, a fourth expert joined the center, with the research focus on the Arctic development, Arctic environment and sustainability, Arctic tourism, and Chinese tourism.

  • November 2018

    Liaocheng University and the University of Alaska Fairbanks signed a memorandum of cooperation in November 2018 and reached an agreement on the joint training of PhD students. Under the agreement, the Arctic Studies Center at Liaocheng University will recruit a doctorate student in China every year and send the student to the Department of Anthropology at the University of Alaska Fairbanks for the study of the PhD degree.

    The unveiling ceremony of ASC was held at our center’s new-finished building. Wang Qiang, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the University, and Qu Feng, Director of the Arctic Studies Center, jointly unveiled the Arctic Research Center.

    Dr. Paul Montgomery gave an academic presentation at the University of Dublin as a representative Professor of ASC of Liaocheng University.

  • March 16, 2019

    ASC held the "Second Arctic Studies Forum - China's Near-Arctic Ethnic Research". Wang Zhaofeng, the Vice President of the University, delivered opening speech. Over twenty scholars from Beijing, Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Yunnan and South Korea participated in the forum. A number of professors are hired as honor professors of ASC at Liaocheng University, namely, Liu Xiaochun, Professor in the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Bai Lan, Professor at the Inner Mongolia Academy of Social Sciences, Qi Jinyu, Dean and Professor of the School of Ethnology and Sociology at the Central University for Nationalities, He Qun, Professor of Ethnology and Anthropology College, Inner Mongolia Normal University, Lin Hang, Professor of the School of Humanities of Hangzhou Normal University, and Tang Ge, Professor of the School of Government Management, Heilongjiang University.

  • May 10 to 11, 2019

    The China Sub-Forum of the Arctic Circle Forum, co-sponsored by the Ministry of Natural Resources of China and the Arctic Circle Forum, was held in Shanghai. ASC participated in the forum as a session organizer. The session was organized with the theme of "Studies of Arctic Indigenous Peoples”, and 7 scholars from Hangzhou Normal University, Inner Mongolia University, the American Barrow Reindeer Culture Association and our ASC made presentations at the session. More than 100 scholars from internationally renowned universities and Arctic research institutions were present at the session.

    Professor Fan Ke of Nanjing University visited ASC to give a lecture. He was also granted as an honor Professor of ASC.

  • June 5, 2019

    ASC Second Academic Workshop invited Professor Sarah Ward, an Australian archaeologist currently affiliated with Dalian Maritime University to give a presentation.

  • June 11 to 12, 2019

    Invited by UNESCO's Management of Social Transformation (MOST) Program and Màlardalen University, Sweden, Professor Qu Feng attended the 2nd Workshop "Toward the establishment of BRIDGES: An International Sustainability Science Coalition, Building Resilience in Defense of Global Environments and Societies", which took place on 11-12 June 2019, at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

    On July 18, 2019, Professor Michael Knuppel, on behalf of ASC of Liaocheng University, gave an academic report entitled "Early Study of Mechanism in Central Asia by Muller and Glenn Weddell" at his alma mater, the University of Göttingen.
